What Does Cryotherapy Feel Like?
Cryotherapy of course feels cold, but a Cryotherapy session provides a variety of other sensations as well. Initially, the nitrogen gas feels as if you are standing in a chamber of dry ice. It feels cold immediately, but only as if you briefly stepped outside in athletic clothing while there was snow on the ground.
The next 30 to 45 seconds feel progressively colder as time goes on throughout your 3 minute session. Once the cryosauna gets to temperature, the outer part of your body feels like someone lightly frosted you. Imagine the light frost layer you see on grass early in the morning during the winter and attribute that to your skin. There is no actual frost on your body, but it feels as if there could be a light layer swept over the outside of your skin.
Throughout the entire therapy session, you will feel cold, but it should never be painful. Some individuals express different external reactions from being cold such as a shivering jaw or wanted to scream explicative words at the top of their lungs. The reaction to being cold will always vary from person to person.
Another interesting aspect of a Cryotherapy treatment is at the end of your first treatment session your legs may get tingly. The sensation you experience when your foot or hand is falling asleep, that “pins and needles,” white static type of feeling may occur in your legs right before your session is complete. The tingling sensation is significantly more therapeutic than the typical “pins and needles” you are probably familiar with.
As soon as the 3 minute session is over, you step out of the chamber and the tingling sensation drips away as your body starts to warm up from your head to your toes. After your Cryotherapy session, your body returns to its natural temperature in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. By the time you get dressed and check out at reception your body will feel warm again.
What To Expect In A Cryotherapy Treatment Session
While you are participating in this treatment method, you are monitored by a technician at all times. These individuals talk to you, check on you and monitor the entire process from beginning to end to ensure you are taken care of. It is recommended that you bring a dry set of clothing, such as a sports bra and athletic shorts if you are a female and boxer shorts or briefs if you are a male. You will be given socks, booties, fleece gloves and a robe to wear before and after you receive your Whole Body Cryotherapy treatment.
You will wear the fleece gloves, socks and booties throughout your treatment session, but not your robe; Cryotherapy works best with direct contact to as much skin as possible. Once you are in the standing chamber, the Cryotherapy technician will close the door of the unit behind you. They will then ask you to hand them your robe through the opening in the top of the chamber. They will return this robe to you before you step out of the chamber at the end of your session.
